Mission Trip to Zambia

WHS is presently looking for a couple of doctors and nurses who are interested in a medical mission trip to Zambia in the November.  This would involve daily medical clinics serving a very poor area of Ndola, Zambia.  The people are anxious to get medical attention.  We are also planning a VBS program with the children there and outreach into the community.  If you have an interest in joining us, or you know someone who wants to go on a mission trip, please contact us immediately or submit an application (mission registration tab).

2011-2012 World Health Services Winter Newsletter

December 2011

Dear Friend of WHS:

We are very excited to share another WorldView newsletter with you.  We realize this edition has focused a lot on Dad (Dr. Bendall), but please understand that because of our connection to him and the fact that he was our founder, we felt it was important to share a little about the man who started us on this journey.

If you were fortunate enough to know Dad personally, you know he was an energetic dynamo of a man.  We have all had to take on the responsibilities he carried for the organization, and one of those main functions was fundraising.  Many of you were touched by his passion and stories of the people he met in his world travels.  And you responded by supporting his efforts on their behalf.

Once again, we are preparing for several trips in 2012:  Tanzania in January, Greece in the spring, Zambia later in the year, as well as a repeat trip to Ecuador also.  We cannot cover all the costs associated with each trip.  And that is where you, our friends and supporters, come in.  Maybe you have always wanted to go on a trip but have not been able to take the time off work or cannot physically make the trip.  Or perhaps you have been on a trip and know how it changed your perspective.  Whatever the case, we would like to present our needs and the ways you can get involved.

DONATION IN MEMORY OF DR. BENDALL- you can specify in which area you wish this gift used or allow us to use it wherever our need is greatest at the time.  In the memo section of your check write “Memory of Dr. Bendall”.

EDUCATION – donations are used to help children in Africa attend school.  School fees are approximately $500 per year and afford a student the opportunity to better their life and in turn make a difference in their family, community and country.  Most of these are orphans or from one-parent homes, having lost parents to malaria or HIV/AIDS.  In the memo section of your check write “scholarships”.

HEALTH – this type of donation helps with medical/vision/dental clinics conducted on our trips, supplying water wells, purchasing medications, health lectures and testing, etc.  Mark the memo section of your check “health/medical”.

EVANGELISM – on each trip we are able to share Jesus’ love with the people by meeting their physical needs as Jesus did.  Sometimes we are able to provide VBS meetings for the children, host meetings with the villagers telling of God’s love for them, and provide materials that tell about Jesus’ gift to them.  Mark the memo section of your check “evangelism”.

JOIN US – another way to get involved is to go along on a trip and experience it first-hand.  If you have felt that tug on your heart and want to join us, simply contact us.

Many of you are looking for a way to “make a difference” in someone’s life during the holiday season.  And others are looking for a tax deduction at the end of the year.  Please remember World Health Services as you contemplate your giving options.  Even the smallest gifts can make a huge difference.

It is our sincere desire to continue Dad’s passion and work, moving forward with a mighty force.  He would be excited to know that others caught his vision and picked up the torch to carry on.  Thank you each one for your friendship, support and prayers throughout the year.  We look forward to an exciting year in 2012 as God leads us on his adventures.

With a grateful heart,

Barbie Simons, President
World Health Services

Simons Successor as WHS President

During last year’s annual meeting, the WHS board voted Barbie Simons President-elect of World Health Services honoring Dr. Bendall’s wishes to take a less active role in the day-to-day activities of the organization.  He was preparing to relinquish the daily routines of the organization and devote time to the future goals and strategies of the organization he founded. With the untimely passing of Dr. Bendall, Barbie has had to assume day-to-day operations for the organization sooner than planned.

Barbie has a very good understanding of the mission and goals Dr. Bendall wished to accomplish and will endeavor to keep his vision alive and moving forward.  She has served on the board since the inception of WHS.  She is also Dr. Bendall’s daughter.  With a dedicated board of mission-minded individuals to support her, she will no doubt make this transition as seamless as possible.

When asked about assuming her father’s role Barbie said, “Dad always lived by his motto ‘To humbly serve is to truly live’.  I hope to follow that example as I serve the needs of others through WHS.  It’s encouraging to remember dad telling me that God does not ask for any qualifications, just a willingness to serve Him and God takes care of the rest.  So I will rely on God to lead me as I try to step into the big shoes (or in his case, cowboy boots) dad left to be filled.”

Currently, WHS is planning their annual trip to Chome, Tanzania where they will be conducting medical/dental/vision clinics.  Other trips are in the planning stages as well.  Please pray for the groups who will be traveling abroad as they humbly serve those in need.

Sad Day for World Health Services

Our Founder, Dr. Richard W. Bendall, passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, after a brief illness.  While we are saddened by Richard’s passing, we rejoice in the fact he touched so many through his service and ministry of Christ.

As many of you know, Richard was the driving force and inspiration of World Health Services and its mission to spread the gospel of Christ in all parts of the world through education and medical assistance to others.  The mission of health education and assistance was just one brief aspect to an amazing resume of service dedicated to helping others understand and benefit from the glory of God.

In the past several hours, we have received condolences from many, many people that in some part of their life were touched by Richard’s service to Christ.  These extended family members bring joy to our hearts with their stories of blessings and relationships with Richard.  Many of you have asked if you can contribute to the on-going mission of World Health Services.  To assist with these requests, we have set up a new link via PayPal to continue the support of others in his memory.

It was his sincere wish that the legacy he began with World Health Services would continue long after he was gone.  With God’s help and leading, it is our goal to fulfill that wish.

MARTHA PHILLIPS, beloved board member, leaves a legacy

One of our beloved World Health Services board members closed her chapter here on this earth in early October of this year.  Martha Phillips served on our board and traveled with us to several countries on mission trips.  Not long after her husband of many years and the love of her life passed away, Martha was watching a 3ABN television broadcast and learned of a project WHS was working on in Tanzania and her interest was peaked.  She had been praying for God to show her how she was to go on with her life now that she was alone.  When Martha expressed an interest to get involved,  Dr. Bendall invited her to come along and experience the mission trip first-hand.  She accepted that invitation and the rest is history.  At the age of 78, Martha joined us on her first trip and traveled with WHS each year thereafter.  She not only traveled to Africa, but also to Galapagos and Honduras.

Martha was such a devoted follower of Jesus.  While on her first trip with us to Africa, she and Dr. Bendall were taken to a small shack which served as a church for a group of believers who were praying for a real church building and for God to help them be a witness and beacon in their neighborhood.  As they shared these burdens, Martha felt her heartstrings being pulled.  Upon returning home, she felt impressed that God wanted her to raise the funds for this church.  In fact, she said that she felt God say to her “why do you think I sent you to Africa?”.  And so Martha began a campaign of raising the large amount of funds needed to build the Lemara Seventh-day Adventist church.  In 2008, this church held a “Martha Phillips Day” honoring the work Martha had done to make their facility a reality.  Thankfully Martha was able to see this project finished before she rested.   It was a thrilling experience for her.  This was only one of the many projects Martha put her efforts into, but it was definitely the largest.

Martha had a very interesting life married to a U.S. diplomat.  She was German by birth, U.S. citizen by choice and lived in many countries and experienced many different cultures.   If you met Martha, you loved her.  It was as if she expected a higher standard of everyone around her and people tried to live up to that standard.  She had an incredible infectious personality.  Her many stories from her travels and her positive attitude drew everyone to her.  Martha was a real lady.  And she had an incredible way of laughing at everything and seeing the bright side of experiences that some people would have gotten their feathers ruffled over.  She had the talent of getting a whole bus load of our team members laughing about something until tears were running down our cheeks.   If there was ever a problem or situation on a mission trip that was a challenge, Martha would immediately  say “Let’s pray” and gather a group for prayer.  And things definitely happened when Martha prayed.

We are very saddened by our loss of Martha.  However, God has promised to reunite us one day and we are so looking forward to that moment when we can share with Martha the experiences we have had as we continue the work laid before us.

Through Martha’s example, we have witnessed that it does not matter your age or where you are in life, if God wants to use you and you are willing, you can do tremendous things.   Martha’s legacy is her giving spirit and we have all been touched by this.  She inspired us each to give more, work harder and stay the course.

Help a student

At the Chome Secondary School where we do mission work each year, there are about 700 students.  Many of these students struggle financially to be able to attend school.  The majority of the students have a situation where they have lost one or both parents to AIDS or malaria.  For $550 per year these students can be educated at a Christian boarding school.  Most are not Christians when they come to the school and the majority accept Christ as their Savior while there.  If you are interested in helping a student stay in school, please click on our donations tab for more information about how to help.   Any amount will be helpful.  An education will help these students to better their life in Tanzania.

Upcoming Trip To Tanzania early 2012

A team of volunteers will be heading to Chome , Tanzania, East Africa for our annual trip in January/February 2012.  We will conduct general and specialized medical, dental and eye clinics.  We are raising funds at this time to help with scholarships for the students at the Chome Secondary School.  Many of these students have lost one or both parents to AIDS and need help to continue their education.  Without your help, they will have no way to complete their education.   Also, we are gathering medical supplies, medications and donations to help with our needs for the medical and dental clinics while in country.   (Donations may be sent to the main office of WHS and checks made payable to World Health Services or use PayPal on the website). Please pray about this trip and for our team of medical staff and volunteers who will be working in Tanzania.

If you feel impressed to join us on a trip, please contact us.  There are many ways you can get involved.
